The role the alligator plays in the Everglades is crucial. He digs deep dens which hold water during the dry season and help hundreds of animals sustain life from one season to the next. The dens are about six to seven yards across and several feet deep. A gator hole may last decades, and the mud that piles up around the edges is where shrub seedlings take hold.
